This is a straightforward gate with a child-proof (and sometimes parent-proof) lock. I like that this one has no plastic parts. We have tried other gates with plastic pieces and I understand why they break. This is more expensive, but I really did not want to deal with a gate that would have cheap parts or break. This was easy for me to install on my own. The locking mechanism sometimes closes itself (if pushed hard enough), but its easy to lift and lower the gate into the lock. I can open it with one hand most of the time - its hard to explain how the lock works. There is a knob on the gate that fits down into a hole on the latch. There are 2 "claws", one on each side of the knob, that then grab the latch. The challenge is in raising these "claws" with your fingers. Its child-proof because you sort of push down, then lift the whole gate up and this is impossible for a kid to do from their angle. My daughter (12 mo) has started touching the latch when she wants to go thru the gate, but she won't be able to open it until she is old enough to go down stairs by herself.

We're very pleased with the construction, installation and difficulty of this gate. It had good instructions and installed very easily. The top of our stairs are secure. Unlike another reviewer, I think this gate is just difficult enough to open. A five year old can open it, once they're shown how (and you'll want them to by that age). You may also have to instruct a visiting adult on how to open it one handed, but at least your younger children will not be opening it. Go to youtube and search for videos of small children opening other gates. It's scary.

My husband installed this gate and didn't have any problems. Its a very sturdy gate and it seems like it will last a long time! Its very easy to operate one handed.
